Carrig 1-14 Midleton 0-24 in Pairc Ui Rinn on Saturday, September 11^th

Carrig couldn’t recover from a slow start to our opening group game in the Cork Senior Hurling Championship and eventually lost out by 7 points to neighbours, Midleton.

Midleton had 4 points on the board before Sean Walsh registered Carrig’ first point from a placed ball. And 1 more Walsh free was all Carrig mustered before the first water break as they trailed 0-2 to 0-7. 3 long-range frees from goalkeeper Shane Devlin kept Carrig in touch with one dropping to the net to see Carrig back within 4, 1-4 to 0-11. 1 more S. Walsh free rounded out Carrig’s first half total as they went in behind, 1-5 to 0-13.

Carrig again started the second half slowly but they roared into the game coming up to the 2^nd half water break with 3 points-in-a-row, including 2 Gosnell frees and a great Twomey strike. An earlier Gosnell free and a Walsh 65 had Carrig facing into the last quarter down by 4 again, 1-10 t0 0-17. But Carrig couldn’t carry on that momentum after the restart and 3 more Gosnell frees and a final placed ball from Walsh brought Carrig’s scoring total to 1-14, 7 points shy of Midletons total. Carrig had a number of standout individual performances and were grateful for some Devlin heroics on both sides of the field.

Carrig meet Sars in round 2 in Caherlag next Sunday at 2pm.
