Carrig 2-22 Castlelyons 2-11 in Lisgoold on Sunday, September 19th
Carrig began their Junior B hurling championship campaign with an emphatic win against 13-man Castlelyons on a wet afternoon in Lisgoold.
Carrig raced into a 5 point lead inside 5 minutes with 2 scores from Luke Kelly, and a point apiece from Daire Crotty, Ollie Baverstock and Sean O’Sullivan. Castlelyons slowly fought their way back into the game however and 2 more Carrig scores from Sean O’Sullivan and Shane Healy were all Carrig could muster as Castlelyons rattled off 1-6 by the 20th minute. A great move just before half time saw Peadar Downey bury to the net to put Carrig back in the lead; 1-10 to 1-7 at the break.
Castlelyons again came back into the game only trailing by a single point on 35 minutes but Carrig had extended that lead to 6 points by the 2nd half water break. Carrig continued their dominance after the restart with Shane Healy netting Carrig’s 2nd goal and as Castlelyons were reduced to 13 men Carrig were able to see out the game comfortably.
Overall it was a hard-fought game with great quality from both sides considering the conditions. Carrig meet St. Catherines in the next group game this Saturday, September 18th.
