East Cork Junior B Hurling Championship Semi-final
Carrig 5-11 St. Catherines 1-11 in Youghal on Sunday, October 24th
Referee: Jim Hennessey (Dungourney)
In a tougher game than the final scoreline suggests, Carrig emerged victorious thanks to timely and well-taken goals in both halves that kept St. Catherines at arm’s length.
Carrig and Catherines went back and forth in the early exchanges before Carrig netted their first of the afternoon thanks to great work from Seamus Roche, who corralled a great ball in the corner and sent a fantastic pass across the goalmouth to Luke Kelly. Kelly’s touch on the run and composure to knock the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper was of the highest quality. Serious credit to Roche too who played his 2nd full game in 24 hours having excelled against Charleville in the relegation playoff the day before. Carrig’s second goal came soon after following another phenomenal run from Kelly, cutting in from the left and slotting home. Catherines didn’t lie down however, notching the next 4 scores before the half leaving Carrig in front 2-4 to 0-8.
3 second half goals from Peadar Downey (2) and Adrian Browne had Carrig always in control but still in a battle against a dogged St. Catherines side. The introduction of Darren O’Driscoll, recently returned from abroad, was also a welcome bonus to a Carrig team that has 5 wins in this year’s competition between the group and knockout stages. Conor O’Mahony, Paul Barden and Shane Murphy were dogged in defense to keep Catherines out with a Saints penalty the only time the rearguard was beaten.
Carrig will now meet Aghada in the East Cork final on Friday, November 5th.
