2022 GOLF CLASSIC LAUNCH NIGHT

The Carrigtwohill GAA Club Golf Classic Committee recently launched the 2022 Golf Classic in the clubhouse.  This will be the first hosting of the event since 2019 The 2020 Classic was not held due to Covid restrictions and last year’s one did not proceed in the interest of public health.

Club president, Eddie O’Riordan was first to address the attendees and he recollected how he suggested at the 1991 AGM that in order to raise much-needed funds for the club, he would play 54 holes of golf in a single day with 100 miles between each of three golf courses.  Séamus Cotter and Oliver O’Brien volunteered to tee off with Eddie; the three caddies were Liam Walsh, Thomas O’Brien and Bobby Keating (RIP).  The three courses played were Ballybunion, Adare and Cork Golf Club.  The club received over £5,000 from that fundraiser and a nice sum was also raised for a cancer charity.  It was from this novel event thirty years ago that the current Golf Classic was born.

Oliver O’Brien acknowledged how Dónal Broderick came on board in the second year and was pivotal in routing funds from the Golf Classic towards the provision of vital equipment in a Cork hospital for sick children.

Séamus Cotter recalled the launch night for the first Golf Classic proper in the Guinness House in Cork, which put the bar staff in the establishment under pressure to serve the drinks fast enough for the well-seasoned ‘supporters’ in tow.

Club cathaoirleach, Peter Hogan thanked David Keane for standing in at late notice to take the photographs on the night.  He acknowledged the sterling ‘behind the scenes’ work of Jim Morrissey and Seán Harte (RIP).  Peter commended Norman Walsh and Jimmy O’Reilly for their ongoing work.  He thanked main sponsor, Guilder’s Bar and also the associate sponsors.  Peter noted that the Golf Classic had benefitted both the club and local charities over many years.

Golf Classic Committee Chairperson, Norman Walsh emphasised that the organisers were very eager to reach out to the grass-roots of the community with this year’s event.  He encouraged all sections of the club to promote the event amongst their members.  Norman noted that the Golf Classic has raised in excess of €300,000 in the thirty years of its existence.  He announced the opening of a Hall of Fame, which will be used to give out awards.  Fittingly, the first inductees into the Hall of Fame will be the ‘Three Amigos’ and their entourage from the 1992 event, which is where it all started.
