Carrigtwohill v Cobh in Carrigtwohill
Saturday 16th July
Carrigtwohill 1.07 - Cobh 1.07
A late rally by Carrig saw them scrape a draw in this first-round championship match played on a balmy evening at Páirc Séamus de Barra.
It was an even contest in the opening quarter, with the sides level on 0-02 apiece after 16 minutes. Darren Burns kicked Carrig’s opening score with Liam Scriven making a good run and offload. Luke Kelly O’Regan converted a free. Tom Mullaney made a super save in the early stages to deny Cobh a goal. He followed up with another impressive stop on 20 minutes and deflected the ball over the crossbar for Cobh’s third score. Cobh added another point before Shane Carry connected very well to send a ‘45’ sailing over the black spot. (The ‘45’ resulted from the Cobh keeper’s save of Matthew Kidney’s kick after good movement of the ball by Carry and Seán O’Sullivan.) Cobh raised one more white flag to make it 0-3 to 0-5 in favour of the Cathedral town at the short whistle. Billy Scully and young Ronan Browne defended very well in that opening half.
Luke Kelly O’Regan closed the gap to a point after kicking a free that resulted from a foul on Seán O’Sullivan. There was a ten-minute spell of stalemate until Cobh goaled from a penalty and added a point to make it 0-04 to 1-06, midway through the half. Luke converted a further free after another foul on the hard-working Seán O’Sullivan to close the gap to four points but Cobh pointed a free to make it a five-point game with just three minutes of normal time remaining. Darren Burns kicked his second point after Luke Kelly O’Regan found him in space with a quick free. Two minutes into injury time, Adam Walsh kicked a high ball goalwards. Luke was fouled as he rose to field it and he crashed a quickly taken free kick low into the corner of the goal. Carrig were awarded a free from the resulting kick-out and Shane Carry calmly kicked it over the bar from 30m to earn Carrigtwohill a draw with the final play of the game.
Well done to the team and their coaches on what was a great comeback to share the spoils. Carrig will play Midleton in their remaining group match.
