Junior Footballers Win in Castlemartyr
May 03, 2023
East Cork Junior Football League Div 1 in Castlemartyr on Tuesday 2nd May
Castlemartyr 0-08 Carrigtwohill 0-16
The junior footballers travelled to Castlemartyr in the knowledge that a win would put them in a very strong position to make the league final.
The home team started more brightly, putting three points on the scoreboard with Carrig yet to click into gear. Dnaiel Murnane kicked three scores (one free), including an angled kick from the right wing to make it 0-04 to 0-03. Liam Gosnell lofted the ball over the bar and Murnane angled another one between the posts to make it level pegging at 0-05 apiece on 15 minutes. Carrigtwohill started to dominate possession in the second quarter with three more scores (two frees) from Daniel to a single free from Castlemartyr, making it a two point game, 0-06 to 0-08 at the break in Bridgetown.
Cian O’Riordan extended the lead for Carrig two minutes after the restart. Daniel Murnane pointed from distance before David Rooney pulled off a good save at his near post. The game became ragged and free-riden; three Murnane frees and two Castlemartyr frees putting the score at 0-08 to 0-13 with less than ten minutes remaining. Carrig kicked on in the final stages with two scores (frees) from Daniel and one from James Mulcahy.
This was a good hour’s effort from Carrigtwohill. David Rooney proved reliable between the posts, with his brother Adam out of action, having had a shoulder operation. (We wish Adam a full recovery.) Tomás Hogan settled into the game at full-back and dominated as it progressed. Pat O’Sullivan was energetic throughout with good forays upfield. Jay Horgan anchored things well at centre back. Liam O’Sullivan was very solid alongside Cian O’Riordan at midfield. Liam Gosnell and David Joseph were good play-makers, with DJ’s surging runs creating good scoring opportunities. The very impressive Daniel Murnane had his kicking boots on from play and placed balls with Séamus Roche working hard, especially when moved to centre forward. Seán ‘Skip’ Rohan linked up the play, with James Mul and Pádraic ‘Bobs’ Hogan proving effective when introduced.
The current league table standings have Carrig na bhFear and Carrigtwohill at the top. Carrig’s remaining round-robin league match is against Youghal on the 21st May.
